Her passion for volunteer dental work was inspired by her parents' experiences working as a doctor and nurse in Papua New Guinea. In 2012, an opportunity presented itself when a doctor working next door to her practice approached her. His wife was a Solomon Islander, and her father, the chief of an area, wanted to build a dental clinic with the help of Dr Leung. Without hesitation, Dr Leung packed her bags and headed to the Solomon Islands to provide dental care to remote communities.

Upon arrival, the situation was a bit overwhelming

She flew to Honiara and then to the province, where she was met with a local government official and taken by boat to the area. The boat ride was rough.

The locals had not seen a dentist in over two years. Her anaesthetic supplies ran out by lunchtime on her first day, as people had heard overnight that there was a dentist there, creating a queue of about 20 people outside the house. Despite these challenges, Dr Leung was determined to help, and since then, she has been working tirelessly with the local community to improve oral health.

It's been more than 10 years since Dr Leung's journey began in the Solomon Islands

The impact she has made is truly meaningful. She has built a dental clinic, trained locals to help with education, and worked with schools to educate the community on oral hygiene. She also brought other volunteer dentists to the islands and connected with the local community.

One of the things Dr Leung noticed during her work in the Solomon Islands, is that the younger people in the rural area didn't have much decay, whereas the older folks had some infections and gum disease. When she was working in the capital, she saw a couple of 13-year-olds who needed about 10 or 12 teeth extracted. Unfortunately, they were not fixable, even if they had been in Australia and had all the technology available.

During her time in the capital, Dr Leung also noticed that there were no toothbrushes available for the kids to buy, and that they had no education around how sugar causes decay. This further highlights the importance of not only providing dental care to remote communities, but also education on oral hygiene and preventative measures to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Dr Leung has also made it a priority to work closely with the schools in the area, providing educational materials and workshops on oral hygiene, and the importance of regular dental check-ups. She also made sure to make toothbrushes and toothpaste available to the community, and to provide education on the importance of reducing sugar intake to prevent decay.

Dr Leung's story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can make. Her selfless acts of kindness have changed the lives of many in the community. Her work in the Solomon Islands is a true example of making a difference in the world. We’ve done some research on what oral care professionals believe are some key steps of an ideal oral health routine.

You probably wonder why we started off with flossing rather than brushing, right? In our previous article, “Should you brush or floss first?”, we found that it’s flossing that should be done before brushing:

“Dental flossing helps loosen the larger pieces of trapped food, which can then be swept away by your toothbrush bristles”.

If you’re using traditional floss (such as our refillable Moso Dental Floss), wind the floss around your index fingers and gently lower it between your teeth. Follow the natural curve of each tooth. When the floss gets dirty, use a clean section for the next tooth. Be sure to get all the way back to those big pearly molars!

Did you know that acid from certain morning foods and beverages (such as orange juice or grape fruit) weakens tooth enamel? A new year, a new morning oral health routine

Here at Pearlii HQ, we still can’t believe it’s another New Year.

Of course, with the New Year comes classic chats about our New Year’s resolutions. Making resolutions is a great way to reflect on achievements and challenges from the past year, and set out meaningful intentions for the year ahead.

We asked the Pearlii Team what their New Year’s resolutions are, and since we’re all about healthy teeth, we just had to ask about their oral health goals too! Read more to find out.

Claudia (UX researcher who’s trying to become an avid reader and flosser)

This year, I want to be more consistent with doing pilates. I feel like pilates really helps to maintain my core strength and keeps me mentally refreshed. I also received a Kindle for my birthday last year, so I’m really looking forward to reading lots of interesting stories, novels and memoirs this year!

My “oral health” resolution is to get into the habit of flossing most days. After some teeth-related injuries, I’ve wound up at the dentist a few more times than I’d like to in 2022. But thankfully, through chats with the dentist, I got some really good tips on flossing such as purchasing the right floss (no two brands are the same!) and following the natural “curves” of my teeth. I’m really looking forward to implementing my new flossing routine soon.

Color (Designer with a love for self-paced projects and fixing fillings)

Throwback to the end of 2021, my resolution was to overcome my fears. I enrolled in a scuba diving course in Cairns in December, and because of the tight schedule, I only expected myself, at least, to complete the pool training part. Long story short, I spent three days completing the two-day training, and don’t think I will go back to complete the boat diving part anytime soon. Surprisingly, I found myself happier once I made the call.

I wouldn’t say my 2022 goal has failed, but it has helped me make my 2023 New Year’s resolution: Some things are just not my things! I should focus on how I feel at every moment. I’ll keep working on projects that give me some fear, but without rushing myself.

Finally, one resolution for oral care is to fix the fillings as my dentist suggested months ago …. so 2023 is all about feeling & filling. ✌️

Etienne (Developer with a penchant for sporting activities and flossing daily)

For me, my new year’s resolution is to get fitter and play in some kind of sport competition. I’ve already begun by trying a whole bunch of different sports last year, like beach volleyball and badminton. In terms of oral health, I’m aiming to floss every day again.

In general, I want to swim more - at least once a month. For my teeth, I want to FLOSS. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Jhonny (Developer with goals for increasing stamina and decreasing sugar)

For 2023, I want to improve my stamina by doing more exercise and get healthier. I would also like to stop eating sugar and whiten my teeth.

Somehow, it’s the end of the year already…

…and holiday season is so close, we can taste it!

At the Pearlii HQ lunch table, we got talking about what we all had planned for the upcoming break. And we all had different tales to tell.

That’s because we’re a diverse bunch, with many of us coming from all around the world.

From Spain to Taiwan, France, Colombia, Indonesia, New Zealand, the United States, and of course, Australia!

So we sat down with the team and asked everyone what some of their favourite end of year holiday traditions are.

Coming from the tiny island of Singapore, my family and I didn’t really celebrate Christmas growing up (the Lunar New Year that comes a couple of months after is a bigger festivity there). So when we moved to Australia, I was always a bit sad that I didn’t get presents or a visit from Santa when all my friends at school did!

Now that we’re all older, my family and I celebrate each year by having a big feast with a good ole Christmas ham and putting on some classic tunes (”All I want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey is a banger).

Since moving in with my partner this year, we’re both really excited to put up our first Christmas tree together, having a few bevs and celebrating with our families and friends. 🍗 🍻

My parents separated when I was little, so we don’t really celebrate any holidays. But something I treasure a lot is growing up with cousins, who are all similar in age (age differences are between 1-4 years, with another much younger cousin).

EVERY single one of them knows at least one musical instrument, except me. So a family concert becomes our Lunar New Year’s Eve tradition. It always turns into a jamming session, with keyboard, guitar, vocals, violin, and even double bass. All genres covered, from classical, jazz, country, to pop.

This becomes my favourite memory of the holiday season, because I am the only one not doing any performances! (well, I can perform life drawing if anyone wants to watch…)

For me, Christmas is really nice for the kids. It was a magical time for me when I was young, and I now enjoy it because my nephews/niece are present. As long as they believe in Santa, we like to dress up like him and surprise them, or leave a bowl of hot chocolate that will ‘magically’ end up empty when we are not around.

But THE most important is the meal of course. We did simplify it though, because the eight course meal we had as kids were too much (prawns, oysters, foie gras, beef, fish, cheese and the Bûche de Noël).

“The Bûche de Noël—or yule log—cake, is a French Christmas tradition that dates back to the 19th century. The cake represents the yule log that families would burn starting on Christmas Eve, symbolising the new year to come and good luck ahead. While no one is positive on exactly how the yule log turned into a cake, we think everyone can agree, it's a delicious tradition we never want to end”.

Before I came to Australia, our family would usually go to Christmas church services on Christmas eve. On Christmas day, I would always wake up to presents under the Christmas tree, that we would always open as a family. Followed by the whole family getting involved in preparing lunch.

We would always have my Dad’s side of the family come to our house for Christmas lunch. Mandatory family pictures around the Christmas tree and in a little corner nook of our house.

Christmas jingles would always be playing in the background and of course a live piano mini concert by my Father.

I am so looking forward to Christmas at home this year!

One thing I really miss from my childhood is going to my neighbour’s houses to attend that specific houses ‘novena’, which is a tradition that begins exactly nine days before the 24th of December, and runs every night until Christmas eve. So we visit different houses each night to pray, sing, and eat traditional Colombian Christmas food.

When we do the “novena”, we pray in front of the “pesebre” of the house, which is a small town (some people make it really big) made of basic materials such as paper, paint, glue and small figures of religious characters or animals.

Christmas has always been very magical time for me, but it is even more special now that I have a toddler. This is the first time she understands the concept and is very excited by all the Christmas lights and decorations.

Santa will visit us on Christmas morning and I can’t wait to see her face when she opens up the ‘Frozen’ electric toothbrush she has been asking for.

My family spend Christmas Eve together. We always end the night singing Christmas carols. As the least musical person in my family - the only one who can’t sing or play an instrument - this has always been my most dreaded part of the night! But it wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t do it.

Some of my happiest memories as a kid come from Christmas time.

Christmas eve would come around and the excitement was unbearable. We’d leave out carrots and a bucket of water for any reindeer who might be passing by, and some biscuits and a glass of milk for the big white bearded fella.

The next morning my sister and I would rise with the sparrows, to find glitter sprinkled around the house (or magic dust obviously left by Santa), carrots half eaten, and leftover biscuit crumbs. We’d open a couple of presents from Santa, and then wait around for the ‘cuzzies’ and the rest of the family to come over - at which point we’d all share presents, feast on Dad’s delicious cooking, and enjoy the day together.

Nowadays, as a “adult” and an orphan living in Melbourne, I try to head back to New Zealand for Christmas, where I enjoy watching my young niece and nephews experiencing the same excitement I once did. If I don’t head back, my partner and I will escape Melbourne for a relaxing night far away from all the madness.

What’s the big problem with dental care?

The lack of access to dental care is sadly still a global health issue. According to the World Health Organisation, it is estimated that oral diseases affect nearly 3.5 billion people around the world. Oral diseases can make life difficult (imagine feeling pain in your teeth every time you had a crunchy snack!) and even life-threatening in some cases.

Despite having a world-class health-care system, not everyone can afford or conveniently access a dentist in Australia. This is mainly because dental care is not fully covered by the government. As a result, many individuals who cannot afford a private health insurance or expensive dental bills are left on long waiting lists on the public system if they want to see a dentist.

4 in 10 people delay or avoid seeing a dentist because of the cost

1 in 4 children (aged 5 to 10) have untreated decay in their baby teeth

1 in 25 people (aged 15 and over) have no natural teeth left.

Additionally, certain population groups really struggle to access dental care. These include people who are socially disadvantaged or on low incomes (such as refugees and individuals experiencing homelessness), people living in remote areas, and people with specialised health care needs.

This is a real shame because oral health diseases are largely preventable with regular check-ups at the dentist.

So what is the Pearlii Foundation (and what is a “Dental truck”)?

We decided to do something to tackle this issue. Through the Pearlii Foundation, we donate 50% of our profits to community dental projects that will help vulnerable people and communities access dental care.

People living in some states and territories have generally poorer oral health than others. For example, it has been found that the prevalence of cavities in children were significantly higher in the Northern Territory and Queensland than other states and territories.

Dr. Jalal Khan, an ambassador of the Pearlii Foundation, has sought to fix this problem. In 2018, Dr. Khan purchased his very first dental truck, a fully equipped and operational dental clinic on wheels. Since purchasing the dental truck, Dr. Khan has been driving his truck to remote regions in Queensland and NSW so that he can provide dental care to those who need it.

In an interview, Dr. Khan expresses that he finds his work in remote communities in Australia to be extremely fulfilling. By doing this job, he has been able to help individuals who have experienced years of teeth pain, fulfilled a dying man’s last wish to eat his favourite food and helped a young mum living in the outback to conveniently get her fillings done. When asked about a memorable experience, he recounts:

“I once had a patient that was in palliative care in his 70s with only a few months to live. He was really struggling to eat steaks and sausages because of the dental pain he was experiencing in his lower mouth. It was upsetting him because he had only had a few months to live because of a cancer, and all he wanted to do was to “eat a steak”.

In about an hour, I was able to do a few fillings and give his teeth a general clean. This helped to get him up and running for the rest of his days. He was so happy to comfortably be able to eat food for the rest of his days.”

He was really struggling to eat steaks and sausages because of the dental pain he was experiencing in his lower mouth. It was upsetting him because he had only had a few months to live because of a cancer, and all he wanted to do was to “eat a steak”. In about an hour, I was able to do a few fillings and give his teeth a general clean. This helped to get him up and running for the rest of his days. Kyle is an epidemiologist and the founder of Pearlii. He sat down with Deirdre Fidge for a chat.

To begin, could you introduce yourself and describe Pearlii in 1-2 quick sentences?

My name is Kyle, I’m the founder of Pearlii, a dental startup in Melbourne that provides free dental check-ups using AI technology.

We also sell our own line of eco-friendly oral care products, with 50% of the profits donated to providing free dental care to First Nation Peoples, as well as other disadvantaged groups.

I’m originally from outback Australia, where dental services are generally scarce, but these services were completely out of reach for me as a child given that my family was quite poor.

This really upsets me because I now know as an adult, and an epidemiologist, how easy it is to prevent oral diseases with routine check-ups, and regularly brushing and flossing.

Sadly, millions of Australians can’t afford or access a dentist, while many also have no idea about the importance of healthy teeth and gums.

I started working on Pearlii in 2018 because I didn’t want any kid growing up with bad teeth. I knew that technology could help - we’re now able to provide people with free dental check-ups and free oral health education through smartphones, at home and available 24-7.

Like many startups working through the pandemic, it’s safe to assume it wasn’t easy for you. What kept you going (and whatkeepsyou going) through the more challenging times?

Building a business is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. There have been many, many times when I thought Pearlii wasn’t going to work, especially during Melbourne’s COVID lockdowns, but for some silly reason I just kept going.

The reasons to keep going have compounded over the last few years. I now have a team to look after, customers, a board, investors, etc. but the initial motivation still lights a fire in my mind - that feeling of shame and embarrassment when I was a teenager, having stained and crooked teeth.

I probably shouldn’t say this, but this wasn’t always the case. It’s taken years to cultivate. I needed to learn how to find, hire, and manage good people. I needed to learn how to manage stress and anxiety. I needed to learn how to build a positive culture, figuring out little signals that reveal when there is an issue. It’s taken longer than I wanted, but I’m so proud of this team. They’re all stars, brilliant at what they do, but even better, they’re fun to work with. A lot of laughter around the office nowadays, which I’m very grateful for. My team is my favourite thing about Pearlii.  What does ‘success’ mean to you? Goals evolve, but right now I’m laser focused on getting our first dental truck. We’re working hard to have our first Pearlii Dental Truck on the road in 2023, but there is still a lot of work to be done before that can happen. The Pearlii App is wonderful on the prevention side, but there are still millions of Australians out there who need treatment, particularly within rural and remote First Nation communities, which is where I plan to send our trucks first. My dream is to one day have a fleet of Pearlii Dental Trucks, funded through our software solutions and oral care products. Thanks Kyle for taking the time to answer our questions!
